Kong & Gratts
BE (Ensemble, 22tracks)
Kong & Gratts have been passionately spreading the real house sound for longer than anyone can remember, making them one of Belgium’s best kept secrets. Together they run the ensemble club nights, blog and label, which so far has showcased a broad range of releases from allies such as Xosar, San Soda, Juliano, Rhythm Mind or Belgian cult jazz band Aksak Maboul, with more exciting music forthcoming. In October 2016, ensemble’s underground contributions over the past few years resulted in the brand’s very first Boiler Room takeover in Antwerp.
Since they started dj’ing at the end of the nineties, they’ve turned into seasoned jocks that know their way around any crowd or night. This versatile style makes them the go-to team for an afternoon warm-up session as much as a peaktime festival performance. It comes as no surprise then, that both together and separately, Kong & Gratts have brought their blend of heavy-hitting house, disco, italo, techno and new beat to some of the world’s most acclaimed clubs like Fuse or Catclub in Brussels, Corsica Studios in London, The Observatory in Saigon, Tag in Chengdu (China), Woodstock Bloemendaal, Studio 80 or PIP in The Netherlands, Griessmuehle, Chalet, About Blank or Watergate in Berlin, as well as the dj-booths of festivals such as Pukkelpop (3x), Dimensions, Horst (2x), Feel Festival, Dour, Listen Festival (3x), I Love Techno or Tomorrowland (3x). Still, if you’d ask them, they’ll probably tell you they have the most fun playing to an intimate crowd in a dark, fog-laden basement. Showing no signs of slowing down, the new year already looks promising for the pair, with plenty of new releases and dj-dates pencilled in.
Listen to the sounds of Kong & Gratts:
Kong shared with us some of his favourite tracks linked to the artists performing at the SuperNova Tech Party in Ampere on Saturday 29th. Have a listen to put yourself in the right mood.
Taken from their 'Techno Primitivism' album from 2012 on Dekmantel, this tune is vintage Juju & Jordash and why their sound appeals so much to me.
Tough to select one track from the colossal discography by Dutch synth wizard Legowelt. His unique and beautiful sounds constantly stir between experiment and dance floor. Almost a genre of his own.
I interviewed Peter Van Hoesen last year for my project the Vinyl Frontier about record collecting. I met him in his apartment in Berlin where we chatted a couple of hours about music, record collection, digital libraries, ... During the interview, a postal service courier delivered a box with a couple of vinyl records. It was a Dekmantel compilation EP with one track by Peter called Storta, which he co-produced with Donato Dozzy. We listened to it and afterwards Peter offered my one of his copies. A gesture I appreciate very much.
Choosing a favorite track from our own label is pretty tough, so I went for a recent one. This dub version of the title track Commandment by Icarus Traxx is quite the trip. The spatial production, solid bassline and dreamy sounds always please me.
