Jan Smedts
Jan Smedts is the head of Digitaal Vlaanderen, the digital transformation agency of the Flemish Government. As a trusted partner for public administrations, Digitaal Vlaanderen drives the digital evolution across government — from data exchange to citizen-centric services. The agency is behind key platforms such as MAGDA, enabling secure data sharing, and Mijn Burgerprofiel, the digital front door for Flemish citizens.
Under Jan’s leadership, Digitaal Vlaanderen has become a cornerstone of digital sovereignty in Flanders. It hosts the Flemish Centre for Digital Security, coordinating cybersecurity policy for both Flemish and local governments. The agency also leads the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence in government — through its AI Competence Center, AI-readiness programs, and practical implementations that bring data-driven public services to life.
Jan also played a key role in the creation of Athumi, the Flemish data utility company, cementing Flanders’ position as a frontrunner in secure and ethical data innovation.
With a master’s degree in Economics, Monetary Economics & International Banking from KU Leuven and an MSc in International Banking, Finance and Economics from Liverpool John Moores University, Jan combines a strong economic foundation with a visionary approach to digital governance.
