About us

MONA is a Belgian medical AI company founded in 2020 as a spin-off from VITO and KU Leuven, developing automated screening solutions to prevent avoidable blindness from diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. The company addresses a critical healthcare challenge: 463 million diabetics worldwide require annual eye screening, yet most are not screened due to long wait times (6-12 months), lack of ophthalmologists, and uncomfortable procedures requiring pupil dilation. Meanwhile, 56% of glaucoma cases remain undiagnosed in Europe, with 95% of vision loss being preventable through early detection.MONA's AI analyzes standard fundus camera images in seconds, providing non-invasive screening without pupil dilation. The technology delivers clinically validated performance: 90% sensitivity and 95% specificity for diabetic retinopathy, and 87% sensitivity with 97% specificity for glaucoma risk detection. Both solutions are CE-marked medical devices. In November 2025, MONA achieved landmark validation when The Lancet Digital Health published results from a large-scale NHS study evaluating eight AI systems on 200,000 real-world screening encounters. MONA achieved the lowest screen-positive rate (23% vs 40-74% for competitors), enabling up to 77% workload reduction for human graders while maintaining near-perfect detection of sight-threatening disease. This best-in-class performance positions MONA as the most efficient AI screening system for national healthcare programs.MONA currently operates in eight Belgian hospitals with 100% contract renewal rates, has live glaucoma screening in Portugal, and is expanding in Spain. The company uses a distributor-led SaaS model charging €1.00 per diabetic retinopathy screening and €1.20 per glaucoma screening. The leadership team includes CEO Dr. Olivier Ménage (25 years MedTech experience at Abbott, Medtronic, Boston Scientific, and Johnson & Johnson), CTO Stef Rommes (AI and machine learning expert), and Medical Advisor Prof. Ingeborg Stal...
