Current frost protection measures are usually too expensive, labour-intense and not protecting sufficiently. Active measures are deployed during the frost night and include irrigation (>10 m³ water/h/ha causing soil problems & infections); wind machines (highcapex, only when inversion and no wind); fire pots/gas burners (require permanence atnight, costly, fine dust and CO2 emissions, unhealthy smoke); (infrared) wires (costly, labor-intensive, only for vineyards). Passive or preventive solutions include products such as FrosTect, Frozil, Bluestim. However, these products were proven to be ineffective by PCFruit and EIP-Agri (European Commission). W'Ice wants to develop a preventive antifrost solution in the form of a sprayable antifrost biostimulant. The biostimulant is based on a key technology, antifreeze molecules, which reduce the freezing point and stop the ice crystal growth in the plant. Since it will be a liquid (or in liquid dissolvable) formulation, cultivators can apply the product using their own spray equipment at hand ensuring frost protection should no longer be a capital-intensive occasion. The product will be applicable to any type of fruit, independent of its growth stage. W'Ice is thereby a universal solution. It is biological and biodegradable, unlike current, less sustainable products or anti-freeze methods. It can be applied preventively in anticipation of a frost event, avoiding the usual labour-intensive installation of ad hoc, often desperate measures, when temperatures drop below 0 °C at night.
